A land of beauty and opportunity, people are moving into Thailand in droves. And a lot of them have no idea of how much renting an apartment should cost and what type of apartment (and maybe furniture and amenities) they’ll get within their budget. To help those people out, we’ve compiled a brief list of the average rental prices and corresponding apartment types.

Budget: 4,000 Baht

There are apartments that you can rent anywhere between 2,000 to 4,000 Baht each month. These apartments are usually studio type apartments (consisting only of one room) with a Thai-style bathroom. A Thai-style bathroom is one where there is no division between the shower and the rest of the bathroom. This means that whenever you take a shower, the entire bathroom (including the toilet and sink) get wet as well. It takes some time for the water to completely drain so you might find yourself walking on some puddles inside your own bathroom. These apartments usually come fully furnished including a refrigerator. However, there are no cooking facilities so you might want to buy a small stove like other Thai locals do and cook on the terrace. These one-room apartments are available within Bangkok and in the suburbs. The farther you are from the city, the lower the price of the rent. For 4,000 Baht a month, you can also rent a townhouse in a subdivision (called ‘moobaan’ by Thais). This is usually a 4-room townhouse but the catch is that you’ll be living far away from downtown Bangkok. Unlike the one-room apartments, these are not furnished so you might have to set aside additional money (a couple of hundred or thousand dollars more) in your budget for furniture and the like.

Budget: 5,000 to 12,000 Baht

With this type of budget, you can get a much nicer place to live in than a one-room apartment. With 5,000 Baht, you can rent a one bedroom apartment with a kitchen and a western-style bathroom that’s 20 minutes from the inner city and located at the far end of the BTS. For 12,000 Baht, you can get a 2 bedroom apartment equipped with a kitchen and a western style bathroom, inside a really nice building and maybe with some amenities like a gym and a pool. The location would be around 5 minutes away from the last stop of the BTS. Both these rental places are located in the suburbs as well. You can also get a bigger townhouse for 5,000 to 11,000 Baht in the Bangkok suburbs. While some may come unfurnished, you may be able to get a furnished one for 11,000 Baht.

Budget: 13,000 to 22,000 Baht

For this type of budget, you can actually get a nice one bedroom apartment within downtown Bangkok. The apartment will be conveniently located near (or maybe even next to) the mass transit systems, shopping malls, and restaurants. If you take the time to look, you might even get a two-bedroom apartment for only 22,000 Baht. And of course, all the apartments within this budget are in western-style buildings with a bathroom, a kitchen, cable TV, internet access, and even laundry facilities.

Budget: 23,000 to 40,000 Baht

With this price range, you can actually get an upscale apartment right at the heart of the city. These apartments are huge, furnished with fashionable décor and have great views. They also have the same amenities as that of those in the lower price range, only a lot better. For example, restaurants near these apartments would be more upscale, pools would be bigger and nicer, etc. The location of these apartments are perfect because you can easily go to any place in Bangkok from there.

Budget: >40,000 Baht

With this type of budget, you’ll be living in a luxurious palace that most of us only dream of. For 80,000 baht a month, you can get a two to three bedroom apartment that’s more like a penthouse with every amenity you can possibly imagine and some you probably can’t. For this amount of money, you can be sure that you’ll be living like royalty. Now, you might think that these prices seem a bit low especially once you convert it to your own country’s money. However, you should take into consideration that compared to countries in the West, Bangkok salaries are much lower thus the rental fees of Bangkok Apartments. It should comfort you though that even with a 4,000 to 12,000 Baht budget, you can get a really nice apartment in a really nice location within Bangkok.
