Choosing the Right Area to Stay in Bangkok

Bangkok is unbelievably diverse. One area can be a commercial district and a residential place at the same time. What areas suits you best depend on several factors such as your main area of business and budget. Outside of these two, it might be worth knowing the different places in Bangkok and what they are known for.

Sukhumvit is a diverse and large region. It is also the longest road in Thailand. It is connected to a host of excellent bars, shopping malls and restaurants. It is the most popular choice of visitors and foreign residents. The BTS Train directly runs along downtown Sukhumvit Road. You will find the red-light districts Nana Plaza at Soi 4 and Soi Cowboy just off Soi 23. Soi 3 and 4 are considered the center of the Muslim community while Soi 21 is a major intersection for many apartment complexes.

Silom is considered the commercial district of Bangkok. There are several residential hotels, which are obviously more expensive, but rarely will you find a residential apartments if at all. You can check Sala Daeng (not far from Patpong) and Ratchadamri. Apartments in Silom can be very expensive.

Ratchada is where you go for a good time. It is connected to the MRT. Ratchada Soi 3,4,5 and 6 have some of the best small clubs. There are also spas around. Smaller areas near Ratchada that are worth checking are Ladprao, Din Daeng and Huay Kwang.

Bangkapi, Ramkamhaeng, Hua Mak

These three areas are about 10-15 minutes away from the business district and they have some of the most affordable smaller studios and apartments. Students are the most common residents of these areas. Outside of the "The Mall Bangkapi", there are no other nearby areas of entertainment. There are also no direct access to the MRT and BTS.

Ladprao, Paholyothin

Ladprao, PaholYothin is even farther from the commercial district, about 15-20 minutes away but the BTS Skytrain and MRT make their stops in the area. It has three big malls, Central Ladprao, Major Pahol Yothin (cinema and mall) and the Union Mall. It is also more expensive than Bangkapi but it gives you some form of isolation without being too far away from civilization. Other areas worth checking are Sathorn, Langsuan, Petburi, Rajadamri, and Chidlom.
